Platform:
- Windows
- XP and later versions
- 2000 will present some troubles regarding transparency and dashing
- 95 and 98 will probably present the same problems as 2000 with more several consequences
- previous version won't have any 'Java Virtual Machine 5.0'_ and therefore won't support Archimedes.
- Linux
- Xorg system
- GTK 2.1
- A distribution that 'allows' non open code as the 'Java Virtual Machine 5.0'_.
- Max OS X
- OpenGL? and SWT present some problems with MacOS? 10.4 and previous.
- Later versions have not been tested yet.
Installation Guide:
Preparation steps:
- If a Java Virtual Machine version 5.0 or greater is not available, you may download one here. If in doubt, we recommend Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0.
- It is also necessary that you download the latest Archimedes version or any other version that you wish to install. Note that "installable" archives follow the naming pattern archimedes-x.x.x-setup.jar.
Running the installer:
- Under Windows, just double-click the downloaded file (with .jar extension).
- Under Linux, run java -jar archimedes-installer.jar on the command line (where java should execute the JVM 5.0 or greater). Double-clicking the file icon might also work, depending on you distribution and desktop environment.
Installer steps:
- Select the prefered language and click OK.
- Information screen: click Next.
- License screen: read the license and, if you accept the terms, click Next.
- Package-selection screen. You may choose to install or not the User Manual by checking or not the box next to it. After that, click Next.
- Install folder screen. Here you may choose were Archimedes will be installed. Use the Browse button if you want to change the default folder. After that, click Next. There are two possible messages after this. If the selected folder exists, the installer informs that files on this folder may be overridden. If it doesn't, the installer informs that it will be created.
- Installation screen. Wait while IzPack? finishes installing Archimedes. When it's done, click Next.
- Shortcut screen. Here you may choose if and where Archimedes shortcuts will be added to your desktop and applications menu. When you're done in this screen, click Next.
- Final screen. Just click Done.
Now, Archimedes has been installed to the specified folder. You may run it by using the shortcuts created during installation or by navigating to the installation folder executing the proper file (archimedes.bat for Windows or archimedes.sh for Unix systems).
